This shrine was dedicated to a branch of the Kotohira Shrine in Sanuki, Shikoku. Since its establishment in the early Edo period, it is said to have attracted the faith of many as the most important Kotohira Shrine in Oshu. It is located on Iwaizaki, which juts out into the Pacific Ocean, and although it is close to the sea, its 10.8m elevation meant that it was spared from the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. The shrine grounds are still designated as an evacuation site for Kesennuma City.
