Otokoyama Main Store

Sake brewery tour

We will guide you through the brewery, explaining about Otokoyama Honten's sake brewing, history, and commitment.
You will also travel to a store that is a nationally registered tangible cultural property, where you will have the opportunity to tour the building and sample some sake.

Tour flow

The tour of the brewery begins with you being enveloped in the soft aroma of sake. You can see how sake is carefully made using ingredients grown in the Kesennuma countryside, while respecting traditional methods, and learn about the profound process of sake brewing.

After the tour, we moved to the store itself. The exterior walls and roof of the store, which features Western-style architectural design, survived the damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. This was restored using remaining building materials with the cooperation of the Kesennuma Kazemachi Reconstruction Study Group, a group that campaigns to preserve Kesennuma's historical buildings.

This place is also a "witness to history" that has walked alongside the port town of Kesennuma. Learning about the background of how it overcame the earthquake and resurrected as a cultural symbol of the town makes the tasting even more enjoyable. Its refreshing taste is proof that it has continued to be a part of Kesennuma's food culture.

This program is designed for both tourists and residents of Kesennuma to enjoy with all five senses the "past" and "future" of Otokoyama Sake Brewery and Kesennuma!
