Take a peek at the town of Kesennuma!

Choinozoki is an experience event where you can take a quick peek into the port town of Kesennuma. This time it's only for two days!
We will hold events where you can tour the workplace, such as the fishing gear used to catch fish, the boxes used to transport the caught fish, and the bonito processing factory, and experience the nature and city of Kesennuma.

We will be holding 2 experience plans over 8 days!

How to apply for each program

Dried bonito production was brought to this region 350 years ago from Kishu Wakayama along with bonito fishing. This tour will take you to the Maruyama factory in Karakuwa Town, where the tradition has been passed down and dried bonito is still made using the traditional Tebiyamashiki method. You can also experience shaving dried bonito and sample the product!

Please travel from the meeting place to the factory by car. If you are coming by public transportation, please let us know in advance so we can provide a shuttle service.

[Hakoya] Hakoya experience

In the port town of Kesennuma, there is a workplace called "Hakoya" that supports the distribution of fresh fish. Big boxes for big fish, small boxes for small fish... From order to delivery, this is a race against time, and it's truly a work of art! Let's take a special trip inside the warehouse to experience the work of a Hakoya!

Fishing gear shop exploration tour

We sneak into a fishing tackle shop that is usually off limits to the public! Ropes, metal fittings, baskets, and other tools are all different depending on the type of fishing. Fishing gear is filled with the wisdom and ingenuity needed to catch fish.

Let's make our own flavorful furikake using dried ingredients that contain the bounty of the sea, including bonito flakes, nori seaweed, and wakame seaweed! Making your own furikake is an experience that fully utilizes all five senses. Aim to become a dried food expert!

Swamp Walk

"Numa Sanpo" is a stroll that explores the charm of a town's history and culture. This time, we will take a deep walk through the inner bay area of ​​Kesennuma with Mr. Kayaoka, a curator at the Rias Ark Museum of Art.

Points to note
On the day, you will walk about 1.6 km. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Please bring a portable drink and a hat. The course will involve walking on flat ground, as well as climbing up and down slopes, hills, and shrine stairs. Please refrain from participating if you have concerns about your legs and hips. If you cancel for personal reasons, a cancellation fee may be charged. Thank you for your understanding.
The tour will proceed even if it is light rain. If the tour is cancelled due to bad weather, we will contact you by 15:XNUMX p.m. the day before. The route and stopover locations may change depending on the weather and course conditions.

Salt making experience

You can experience making mineral-rich natural salt using Iwaizaki seawater while learning about the history of salt making. You can take home the salt you make as a souvenir.

Walk around the morning fish market (guided tour)

A classic Kesennuma tourist activity: get up a little early and walk around the fish market with a guide. Kesennuma is one of the leading fishing ports in the country, and seasonal fish are landed every day. There is a lot to see at this lively market! We will also take you to the Fisheries Information Center, which is full of rare exhibits such as impressive footage that can only be seen here and a Fisherman's World Map! This is a tour you cannot miss when visiting Kesennuma!

Points to note
If you are an elementary school student or younger, please apply with a parent or guardian. If we are unable to arrange a guide, your request may be canceled.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes. If it is cold, please bring warm clothes and a jacket. Depending on the application situation, you may be guided together with other groups.
In case of rain, please bring an umbrella or other rain gear. The event will be held on the opening day of Kesennuma Fish Market.
Depending on the catch situation, you may not be able to see any fish. If danger is expected due to natural disasters or other reasons, the tour will be canceled. We will notify you by phone or email.

On the rocky shore you can find crabs, hermit crabs, and small fish... On the pebble beach you can find sea glass and sea pottery. We will take you to a secret beach with lots of interesting things! You can make a photo frame out of the sea glass you find.

Please wear clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting wet. Life jackets will be provided. Please bring a portable drink, hat, towel, etc. The creatures will be released after observation. You can take home any items you find on the beach, such as sea glass, and photo frames.
