Introduction
Nice to meet you. I'm Ota, who moved to Kesennuma in May this year.
I'm a beginner who started fishing after moving to Miyagi! If you see me around town, please feel free to say hello!
Kesennuma actually has many great fishing spots! And there are also spots where even beginners can easily get started. This time, we will be reporting on a beginner Ota's attempt at fishing in Kesennuma, guided by Ryu, a popular Kesennuma fishing YouTuber from "Anahazeti."

Kesennuma, the northernmost point of Miyagi
Kesennuma is a city located at the northernmost tip of Miyagi Prefecture. Located on the Sanriku coast, it is home to a wide variety of fish! Kesennuma is famous for its bonito and swordfish. The area is also rich in geography, with the remote islands of Kesennuma Oshima and the naturally rich Karakuwa Peninsula now easily accessible thanks to the bridge.

There are plenty of fishing spots in the inner bay area!
One of the thriving areas in Kesennuma is an area known as the "inner bay," which is a popular tourist spot. At night, it is lit up with electric lights, creating a truly magical atmosphere! This is the innermost part of Kesennuma Bay, but it is home to many fish typical of the Tohoku region, such as rockfish, sea bass, and rockfish.

Let's try fishing in Kesennuma!
This time we will be fishing at the L-shaped quay, a popular spot in Kesennuma!
It is called this because large ships are moored here and the U-shaped pier juts out into the bay.
You can park your car on the quay and there is a toilet nearby, so it is a recommended spot for fishing beginners. The red pier of Ukimido is an impressive tourist spot, and there is also a public toilet nearby.
*If there are boats moored or fishermen working, park in a place that will not get in the way.

If you run out of bait or tackle, you can buy more at fishing tackle shops such as "Marukano Fishing Tackle Shop" and "Kesennuma Kappado"! Kesennuma Kappado also accepts points cards called Kesennuma City Crew Cards!

terrain
This place is deep from the feet up and the bottom is basically sandy mud.
Located at the inner bay of Kesennuma Bay, with a river nearby, it is also a great place to catch brackish water fish (where seawater and freshwater mix) such as goby.

How to fish
This time we tried to catch "Japanese goby"!
The rig used was a balance rig for short throws, and the bait was the standard bloodworms.

Tips on how to fish!
Gobies live near the bottom, but are interested in things that fall from above or move.
Cast the rig and let it hit the bottom.
The impact of the weight hitting the bottom causes a cloud of sand to rise, attracting the interest of any nearby gobies.
Then, after a delay, the food slowly falls down, and the fish finds it and gobbles it up.

If there is no reaction, give the rod a swift flick, reel in the rig about 1m, and wait for a bite.
You can also just drag it along the bottom and stop occasionally.
The process is repeated: move the mechanism → stop → move the mechanism → stop.
Rather than just throwing it and leaving it, the key is to search a wide area so that the gobies can find the bait as much as possible!

What you need for bank fishing
*For goby and kissing
Here is a list of what you need to fish on the pier during the day.
・Fishing rod
・Reel (with fishing line wound on it)
・Mechanism
·feed
・Cooler box
・Water bucket

be careful
Check whether fishing is prohibited
・Always wear a life jacket!
・Fishermen have priority! When a boat comes, raise your fishing rod from the sea.
・When casting your bait, make sure it is safe around you
・Take your trash home with you and clean up the area you used before leaving

Can even beginners catch fish?
An exciting first throw...
Once the rig hits the bottom, wait a bit.
If there is no reaction, make a large movement of the rod to let the goby know that there is bait.
If you keep doing that...

...Ohta hit it on his first throw!!

I was able to catch my target fish, the Japanese goby!
It's so fun to watch the moment when you get a bite.
Ryu also caught a goby right away!

The goby looks so cute!
I never thought it would be so easy to catch fish in such a tourist spot.
In the end, I managed to catch six fish in an hour! That's enough food for today!
After trying it, I noticed that I got a lot of bites from goby while I was moving the rig and then waiting.
If there was no response, I felt it was important to move the bait to let the goby know that there was bait.
If you catch one, be sure to try cooking it!
Goby is a well-known high-class fish that loses its freshness quickly and is rarely available in the market! If you catch one, be sure to eat it on the same day.
Of course, there's the classic tempura, but you can also eat the smaller ones marinated in nanbanzuke or grilled goby, and the larger ones as sashimi.

Ryu made Nanbanzuke, grilled goby, and sashimi (with liver).
Ota also tried making tempura!
I managed to prepare it by referring to Anahazeti's YouTube videos and articles on cooking sites.
It had a refined taste without any strong flavor and a light and fluffy texture, and was very delicious.

Come to Kesennuma!
How was it?
I was so impressed that I could catch delicious fish at a tourist spot!
I was reminded once again that this is a wonderful town where you can encounter fish just by looking at the cliffs.
I think I'll try going fishing alone next time.
Come visit Kesennuma too!
★By the way, we also caught Asahian goby and rockfish on the same day!

★And what's more, Ryu has uploaded a very helpful video, so be sure to check it out!

I've been a Kesennuma resident for three months. I've been fishing from the pier for a year and a half. I've finally gotten the hang of handling earthworms. I want to go to a managed fishing pond!
