Hello everyone!
My name is Ana Hazeti, a fishing YouTuber based in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture!
This time, we will introduce the fish that can be caught in our hometown of Kesennuma from August to October.
We explain everything from how to fish to fishing spots, so we hope this will be helpful for anyone who wants to try fishing in Kesennuma.

Fishing in Kesennuma

The Sanriku coast is characterized by a complex topography of narrow bays called rias coasts, with the sea and mountains adjacent to each other. Kesennuma is also a town with a thriving fishing and marine products industry, and is one of 13 designated third-class fishing ports in the country. For this reason, Kesennuma Bay is equipped to allow large fishing boats to anchor there.
From a fisherman's perspectiveLarge ships can be anchored here = deep waterIt will be said.
You can catch fish just by dropping the bait at your feet without having to cast it far, so it's an easy environment for beginners to fish in.

Fish you can catch in Kesennuma!

This time, we've picked out fish that can be caught from August to October.
We will introduce you to fishing methods that allow you to catch fish even during the middle of the day in midsummer, and fish that can be caught at night when the weather cools down!

Japanese rockfish

The first fish is rockfish, which is characterized by its large eyes.
Rockfish often move in schools, so if you catch one, you can expect to catch several!
During the day, the key is to fish in dark places such as the shadow of a boat or the edge of a breakwater.

They tend to scatter over a wide area during the dim light of the mornings and evenings, and at night, so the key is to search widely from the surface to the bottom!
You can catch fish not only with bait fishing, but also with worms and lures, so give it a try.

Goby

Next up is the goby, a fish that is fun to catch and delicious to eat!
Goby is known as an autumn delicacy, and August to October is the peak season for catching large goby!
The basic fishing method is bait fishing using earthworms, and the target point is the confluence of the sea and the river (brackish water area). Gobies are not poisonous or thorny, so they are recommended for families with small children, couples, and especially for beginners!

The tempura made from the goby you catch has no unpleasant odor and is delicious, so if you catch a lot, be sure to give it a try!

Conger Eel

Next up is the classic summer night fishing fare: conger eel.
This is a large fish that can be caught close to home and is best caught during dark hours or on murky days.
The best spot to target is a place where the seabed is a mixture of mud and sand and where there are hiding places for conger eels, such as discarded stones!

The standard bait is filleted pacific saury, but you can also catch fish with salted fish from 7-Eleven (lol).
You can fish for rockfish and other fish during the day in the same places after dark, and if you catch a large one, the pull will be fun, so if you're interested, please give it a try!

What about fish like this?

If you time it right, you can catch small horse mackerel and mackerel using sabiki fishing or small worms!
Since it is a bluefish, it is constantly migrating, but when the sea offshore becomes rough it comes into the inland bay.

Blue fish lose their freshness quickly, so once you catch them,Put ice and seawater in a cooler box and freeze it immediatelyWe recommend that you then pack up the items in a freezer bag and take them home.

If you catch a lot, you can deep fry them and have a great snack with beer!
This is really good, so I recommend it ♪

Fishing spot introduction

We'll introduce you to some recommended fishing spots in Kesennuma Bay that are easily accessible by car and have shops and toilets nearby!
This is also the location where Anahazeti actually films for her YouTube channel, so I hope this helps.

★Fishing spot point 1: Konoji Pier

This is a cliff located at the inner bay of Kesennuma. In addition to being able to target rockfish with hechi fishing, it is also a good spot to catch gobies and flounders with a little cast, as it is close to the river mouth.
There are toilets nearby, and it's easy to enter by car.

★Fishing spot point 2: Commercial wharf

You can do anything from flathead fishing to casting fishing! As it is the entrance to Kesennuma Bay, the tides flow well and blue fish and other fish migrate here.
It's a great spot for fishing for bottom fish such as rockfish and rockfish, and also for conger eels at night.
The area is spacious, so it is recommended for those who are fishing with multiple people such as family or friends.

★Fishing spot 3: Around the fish market

This is a place where you can go fishing while sightseeing in Kesennuma's inner bay.
Because the area is hollowed out, the key is to use a casting line to target the scattered reefs and seaweed areas!
Not only bottom fish such as rockfish and black porgy, but also blue fish such as sardines and small horse mackerel migrate here.
There are toilets and convenience stores nearby, so you can enjoy fishing with peace of mind.

This is the key point!

Keywords that have come up several times in the past"Hechi fishing"I will explain about!
When you first start fishing, you will want to cast it as far as possible. In fact, your feet are the hidden highlight!

As you can see, there are places where seaweed is growing and the ground is hollowed out, so try searching within the area you can see first! If you're lucky, you'll get to see the moment when the fish bites the bait, which is very exciting!

Even at convenience stores?!

Also, although it may be rare for people living inland, many convenience stores in Kesennuma stock fishing equipment (laughs).
They also sell live bait, so you can fish safely even late at night!

Let's go sightseeing while fishing!

Fishing is fun, even the traveling and waiting time.
If you've come all the way to Kesennuma, why not stop by a local shop for lunch or a light snack?

Fishing precautions

Although 11 years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, there are still some areas in Kesennuma Bay where restoration work is underway.
Please be aware that access areas and road conditions change daily, so please be careful when fishing.

Also, as a matter of etiquette for anglers
- Take home any trash you produce at the fishing spot.
- Park your car in the designated area.
- Be careful not to cause trouble to people using the fishing port (quay) or fishermen.
- Wear a life jacket in case you fall into the water.
Let's be mindful of our actions as anglers that we won't be ashamed of!
