It was founded in 5 by Kajiwara Kagezane, the brother of Kajiwara Kagetoki, a famous warlord in the Genpei War. Since prayers for safe childbirth were held here for Hojo Masako, it has long been said to have divine powers for safe childbirth and child rearing. The Shinko Festival, held on the first Sunday of October, is a lively event that features a portable shrine procession, a boat festival, and local performing arts, and is crowded with many people. At the top of Mt. Hayama is the inner shrine.
