The sea god arrives!

Events 2026/02/03

Kesennuma's winter tradition, the Sea God, will be making an appearance again this year. This event involves the Sea God wearing an ogre mask and carrying scallops and bottled water balls, parading through the city to pray for the healthy growth of local children, safety for families, and prosperity for business. The Sea God takes on the children in a serious contest, expressing his heartfelt thoughts about the future of the region through his words and actions.

Kesennuma's version of Namahage, the Sea God, is said to have originated from a father's feelings for his beloved child. It's not just scary, it's filled with a deep, warm love for children. This is the only day you can meet the Sea God! Come and experience the majestic and powerful Sea God for yourself.
