"The history and culture of Kishu and Michinoku connected by bonito fishing and Kumano faith"
Kesennuma has been the number one city in Japan for fresh bonito landings for 28 consecutive years.
This year, the original method of pole-and-line fishing for bonito, "tame-zuri fishing,"
It has been 3 years since it was brought to Japan by fishermen from Kishu (present-day Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture) in 1675, during the early Edo period.
Additionally, there is a legend that in 2 during the Nara period, the god of Kumano arrived in Karakuwa Magoritate from Kishu and was enshrined at Mt. Murone.
Since then, Kumano faith has spread widely throughout Michinoku and continues to have deep ties with Kishu Kumano.
This symposium is being held to commemorate 350 years since the introduction of the Kishu bonito pond fishing fishing technique, which marked the beginning of the formation of the fishing city of Kesennuma. The aim of the symposium is to learn together with local citizens about the history and culture of the Kishu bonito fishing technique, which was brought across the sea, and the Kumano faith, and to pass it on to the next generation.
