Why not enjoy a stroll around the town along the Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail, heading for the summit of Mount Awa?
Let's aim for the summit while looking at the scenery typical of a port town, such as the quay where you can see huge fishing boats and the Kazemachi area where registered cultural properties are scattered! You may get lost on the narrow paths that make you feel like you're walking in someone else's garden if you're not with a guide. The climb near the summit is quite steep, but you'll be soothed by the sense of accomplishment and the view after you reach the top. Kesennuma-exclusive snacks and light meals are also available!
What is the Michinoku Coastal Trail?
It is a long trail that connects about 1,000 km from Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture to Soma City in Fukushima Prefecture. The appeal is that you can discover the charm of the land by walking on your own two feet while experiencing the magnificent nature of the coast and the warmth of the local people, and many hikers enjoy trekking in Kesennuma City.
Mount Aba, the symbol of Kesennuma
Mount Anba, 239 meters above sea level, was named with the hope of praying for safe voyages and a good catch, and is the symbol of the port town of Kesennuma. From Mount Anba, you can see ships arriving and departing from Kesennuma Bay, Oshima, the Karakuwa Peninsula, as well as the sea, mountains, and rivers.
Highlights of the course
[Left] Mount Aba, the symbol of Kesennuma Bay, is a low mountain with an elevation of 239m, but it is a challenging climb with various small paths and steep climbs.
[Right] Moored fishing boats on the Sea Road. Many boats are moored in winter, creating a special scene that can only be seen at this time of year.
[Left] At Kesennuma City Reconstruction Memorial Park, you can feel the memories of the earthquake and get a sense of the progress of reconstruction.
[Right] Kesennuma city has many slopes, making it a challenging walk, and the scenery changes from place to place. Another attraction of the course is the small paths you can walk along with a guide.
