Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail Travel Section Hike 1 [Inner Bay to Matsuiwa]

The Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail Travel Section Hike is an event for trail beginners where you can enjoy walking a part of the approximately 100 km Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail in Kesennuma city. Why not take this event as an opportunity to try your hand at hiking the Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail and traveling in Kesennuma for the first time?

The first part is a walking tour of the heart of Kesennuma's main industry, the fishing industry. The tour starts with a close-up look at large fishing boats. From Minami-Kesennuma Station to Matsuiwa Station, take the Kesennuma BRT Line (additional charge). From Matsuiwa Station, follow the road along the coast. Head north while taking in the sights of Kesennuma Oshima. On the way, visit the Spiral Staircase of Life (former Abe residence), a relic from the earthquake disaster.

The Asahimachi area, lined with shipyards and seafood processing factories, has a streetscape befitting a port town. Afterwards, you'll get a close-up look at the Inner Bay Crossing Association from the commercial pier.

Finally, we will visit Kesennuma City Fish Market. Since it is a closed day, you will not be able to see the landing of the fish, but the guide will show you videos and exhibits that can only be seen here. You can also try your hand at line-fishing for bonito.

The finale of the trip is a sea road. You will head towards the goal while watching large fishing boats. You may even see a boat fishing for single-line bonito.

After you reach the finish line, be sure to enjoy some Kesennuma cuisine. You will also receive a ticket to Kesennuma Onsen, so you can wash away the sweat of your journey.

This is a special program filled with Kesennuma and bonito stories, befitting the 350th anniversary of the introduction of bonito pole-and-line fishing.

What is the Michinoku Coastal Trail?
It is a long trail that connects about 1,000 km from Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture to Soma City in Fukushima Prefecture. The appeal is that you can discover the charm of the land by walking on your own two feet while experiencing the magnificent nature of the coast and the warmth of the local people, and many hikers enjoy trekking in Kesennuma City.

Highlights of the course

Daily life in a port town

We head towards Minami-Kesennuma Station on the BRT along the sea road lined with large fishing boats. Fishermen and other fisheries workers can be seen working on the quay. You can get a feel for the daily life of a port town.
In addition, a ticket for a day trip to the hot spring will be included, so after the event, you can wash away the sweat from your hike while fully enjoying the charms of the deep natural hot spring water that springs from 1,800 meters underground.

The story of recovery

The external spiral staircase at the former home of the founder of Abe Cho Shoten Co., Ltd. was installed by Chairman Abe four years before the Great East Japan Earthquake as a way to use the rooftop as an evacuation site, learning from the many lives lost in the tsunami caused by the Chilean earthquake in May 1960. As a result of regular evacuation drills, 5 lives were saved on the day of the earthquake, and the staircase was named the "Spiral Staircase of Life" to convey the lessons learned from the disaster.
The Kesennuma Bay Crossing Bridge can be seen up close from the commercial port quay where cargo ships and other vessels are moored. With the opening of this bridge, the entire 126 km long road that had been developed as a "Reconstruction Road" in Miyagi Prefecture has now been opened to traffic.

Towards a center of the fishing industry

Kesennuma City Fish Market is a facility established by Kesennuma City, where the Kesennuma Fisheries Cooperative Association carries out wholesale operations. Located in Kesennuma Fishing Port, a designated third-class fishing port out of 13 ports nationwide, Kesennuma City Fish Market receives large amounts of seasonal seafood every day from the fishing grounds off the coast of Sanriku, one of the world's three largest fishing grounds. The city is not only a home port for coastal fishing, but also for deep-sea fishing boats, and boasts some of the largest catches of bonito, pacific saury, swordfish, and shark in the country.
As the aquarium is closed on the day, you will not be able to see the fish being landed, but you will be able to view the various exhibits that can only be found here.
