Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail Travel Section Hike 2 [Iwaizaki to Otani Coast]

The Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail Travel Section Hike is an event for trail beginners where you can enjoy walking a part of the approximately 100 km Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail in Kesennuma city. Why not take this event as an opportunity to try your hand at hiking the Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail and traveling in Kesennuma for the first time?

In the second part, we will walk along the road from Iwaizaki to Otani Coast, where magnificent sea views continue (approximately 2 km).

The tour starts at the scenic Iwaizaki Cape, where you can see the seawater gushing out from cracks in the limestone rocks that have been eroded by seawater over the years, as well as the Dragon Pine, a symbol of Iwaizaki's restoration.

After that, we will pass several capes and head towards Otani Coast.

We head south, enjoying the changing appearance of the sea from place to place.

Once you arrive at Otani Kaigan Roadside Station, take a break on the deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

From Otani Kaigan Roadside Station, take the BRT back to Rikuzen-Hashikami Station. You'll return to Iwaizaki, the starting point, while admiring the Kesennuma City Great East Japan Earthquake Relics and Memorial Museum (formerly Kesennuma Koyo High School) from the outside.

After reaching the finish line, be sure to enjoy some Kesennuma cuisine. You will also receive an admission ticket to the Kesennuma City Earthquake Relics and Folklore Museum or a day-use bathing ticket at Kesennuma Plaza Hotel (one ticket per person).

The course is flat and has many easy-to-walk paths. This event is aimed at trekking beginners. Why not take this opportunity to try a slightly longer trek? Your guide will also give you some tips on walking!

What is the Michinoku Coastal Trail?
It is a long trail that connects about 1,000 km from Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture to Soma City in Fukushima Prefecture. The appeal is that you can discover the charm of the land by walking on your own two feet while experiencing the magnificent nature of the coast and the warmth of the local people, and many hikers enjoy trekking in Kesennuma City.

Highlights of the course

Iwaizaki

This scenic spot offers the view of seawater gushing out from cracks in the limestone rocks that have been eroded by seawater over the course of many years, as well as the Dragon Pine, a symbol of Iwaizaki's reconstruction.
The Iwaizaki Limestone Fossils are designated as a natural monument of Miyagi Prefecture.

Isehama

Gentle waves and a long, shallow sandy beach. Originally called "Nagasuka" due to its long sandy beach, it came to be called "Oisehama" because it is located on the west side of Isezaki, where Ise Shrine, the guardian deity of Aketo Port, is enshrined. During the period of rapid economic growth in the Showa era, countless buses visited the beach, bustling with beachgoers. Immediately after the earthquake, the beach was washed away and the pine forest was completely swallowed up by the tsunami, creating a desolate landscape. However, with the construction of a seawall and beach nourishment, the gentle waves and shallow sandy beach have now been restored to their pre-earthquake state. In the summer of 2022, it will be reopened as a swimming beach for the first time in 12 years, and the lively summer will return to the beach.

*The beach will not be open for swimming in the 2025 season.

Otani Coast & Otani Coast Roadside Station

Otani Kaigan Roadside Station is located nearby, making it a great place to have lunch or pick out souvenirs to take home.
Because families and groups can easily enjoy the sea, it has been selected as one of the Ministry of the Environment's "Top 100 Beaches." The sand is fine and there is apparently a lot of sea glass. Take a leisurely stroll along the beach and look for it.

The roadside station "Oya Kaigan" is located in Motoyoshi-cho, Kesennuma City, and serves as the southern entrance to Kesennuma. Before the earthquake, the roadside station kept sunfish in its aquarium, and the sunfish has become the main character of the roadside station.
The roadside station's theme is "All Kesennuma." It is stocked with a wide variety of ingredients and local products from Kesennuma, and offers a range of products that convey the charms of Kesennuma.
