For those who want to eat lots of seafood

Tsurukame Restaurant

Tsurukame Shokudo started out with the idea of building a warm bath near the port where fishermen could stretch out their limbs and relax after coming into the port after a day of fishing. As a lot of fresh fish such as bonito, pacific saury, and swordfish are landed at Kesennuma Fish Market depending on the season, the restaurant opened in a corner of Mishione Yokocho in front of the fish market as a place where fishermen and people working at the market could casually interact with each other, along with the bathhouse. The restaurant was born from a strong desire for fishermen to make Kesennuma "the town that cares for fishermen more than any other in Japan."

▲ Greedy set meal (1,500 yen)

The recommendation at Tsurukame Shokudo is the "Yokubari Set Meal." On this day, the set meal consisted of bonito sashimi, stewed collar, and a small side dish, all caught by the deep-sea bonito line-fishing boat, the 18th Kameyomaru. The respect they have for the fishermen is clear from the fact that they always tell the customers which boat caught the fish. And, bonito is served as sashimi! This is something unique to Kesennuma, so please give it a try. The soy sauce used is a little sweet, recommended by fishermen from Miyazaki. The collar stew has a nice salty flavor, and you'll find yourself eating more rice than usual.

▲Tsukemono bowl set meal of the day (1,200 yen)

Other options include the Fisherman's Staff Set, Swordfish Harmonica Set, and Pickled Tuna Rice Bowl Set of the Day. The marinated bonito rice bowl is delicious with just the marinated bonito, but it's also irresistible when eaten with rice. After the pickled bonito rice bowl, they also serve it as ochazuke, so you can enjoy it twice!
During the peak fishing season, fishermen may come here after unloading their catch, so if you meet them, they may tell you stories about their fishing. Such encounters will also become memories of your trip.
This delicious breakfast made with fresh fish is sure to satisfy you!

Lunch Box/Dining Tabagoya

Tabagoya, a bento and restaurant located in front of the fish market, is open from 6am and uses fresh fish and seafood procured from the fish market. The menu is extensive, with recommended dishes such as seafood bowls, tuna bowls, and negitoro bowls, as well as set meals, curry, omelet rice, katsudon, and other rice bowls, ramen, and other dishes, making it a great place to bring children. It is also close to business hotels and the fish market, so it is a popular restaurant with tourists, people on business trips, and fishermen.

▲Seafood bowl (1,900 yen)

The most recommended dish at Tabagoya is the seafood bowl that comes with a small side dish and miso soup! It comes with eight kinds of seasonal seafood toppings and a fried egg! What's more, the tuna, bonito and other toppings are so thick! It's very filling! And the price is reasonable, which is great. It's recommended for those who still want to eat a lot of seafood!

▲Shark fin ramen (1,500 yen) and tuna ohagi (400 yen)

Kesennuma is also number one in Japan for the amount of sharks landed there, and when you think of shark fins, Kesennuma is the place to go! At Tabagoya, you can eat ramen with this luxury ingredient, shark fin, limited to 15 servings per day! This is definitely something you'll want to try. Shark fin is time-consuming to prepare, so it's hard to find, even in the local area. It's great to be able to easily eat shark fin in ramen. And to go with the ramen, you can also get tuna ohagi. If you're wondering what tuna ohagi is, you'll have to try it for yourself♪
If you come to Kesennuma, you can't miss out on breakfast. Enjoy some delicious seafood.

RAVEN

If you want to eat delicious Italian food in Kesennuma, this is the place to go! CORVO is an Italian restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Tuscan cuisine in a casual atmosphere, and is frequented by locals. CORVO uses traditional Italian cooking techniques to make the most of Kesennuma's rich sea and mountain produce, and serves Italian food that you won't find anywhere else.

▲ Prosciutto and arugula panini (1,000 yen)

▲Roast pork and carrot salad panini (1,200 yen)

At CORVO, you can enjoy the Sunday-only breakfast panini and lasagna, which are only available to those in the know. Panini is an Italian snack made of bread with ingredients in between, similar to a hot sandwich in Japan. The set includes a panini and a drink (lasagna is sold separately).
This time I had a panini with seasonal arugula and cheese. The arugula was ordered from a local producer to be used as an accent, and was very spicy. The bread was crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside, and the slight spiciness and bitterness of the arugula combined with the saltiness of the cheese and prosciutto created an exquisite balance of flavors!

▲ Course meal (6,000 yen)

The breakfast menu, available only on Sundays, includes panini and lasagna, while lunch options include pasta, lasagna, and wagyu steak. In the evening, they serve Italian cuisine with a rich regional flavor that makes use of local ingredients, from appetizers to pasta, meat dishes, dolce, and course meals, so you can enjoy Italian food that you can't find anywhere else. There are also over 60 types of Italian wine to choose from, mainly from the Tuscany region. Everything is delicious, but my personal favorite is the spaghetti made with San Marzano from Kesennuma.
When you visit Kesennuma, why not try some Italian snacks that are a little different from your usual breakfast?

The interior of the store is very bright, stylish and has a great atmosphere, and the garden is full of greenery, so you can spend your mornings relaxing.

▲Homemade tiramisu (780 yen)

There are a variety of sweets and lunch menus, but the recommended sweet is the homemade tiramisu, which is only available at the Motherport store, and is made with espresso brewed from in-house roasted coffee beans. With one bite, the bittersweet taste of the espresso that has soaked into the batter and the rich mascarpone cream blend together and melt in your mouth in an instant. This is tiramisu made with care by a coffee shop, just as you would expect. It's a delicious tiramisu with a sophisticated taste, so be sure to give it a try♪

Anchor Coffee Uchiwan is a cafe located in Mukaeru, Uchiwan district. This cafe faces the sea and has an excellent location! The bright and open interior is popular with locals and tourists alike. Depending on the season and weather, it might be nice to relax outside in the pleasant breeze.

▲ Croque Madame Toast and Drink Set (980 yen)

The Uchiwan branch offers a morning menu with a drink and Croque Madame toast, a toast made with ham, soft-boiled eggs, and cheese on a slice of bread. When you cut into it, the egg yolk spills out. Enjoying a delicious Croque Madame toast while looking out at the sea is a special experience. In addition to the morning menu, they also offer croissants and pain au chocolat. It's also nice that they write a message and a picture of Hoya Boya on the towel.

▲ Night parfait (980 yen)

The recommended sweets only available at the Uchiwan store are the night parfaits, which can only be eaten at night! You can enjoy seasonal parfaits here. It's also great as a finishing parfait after a meal or after drinking. We also recommend enjoying a night parfait while looking at the night scenery of Uchiwan!

We also recommend the cup-on-coffee and baked donuts on display! In addition, they are open from morning to evening and into the night, making them a very convenient cafe to visit.

ヴァンガード

Vanguard in Minamimachi is a long-established jazz cafe that was founded in 1967. Jazz music plays from large speakers in the retro atmosphere of the store, and regular customers can be seen chatting at the counter... It is a cafe with the charm that only a long-established store can have.
After being damaged in the earthquake, Vanguard managed to reopen in July 2011 thanks to support from regular customers and from all over the country. However, after reopening, the owner passed away in 7, and the bartender who had supported him for many years passed away the following year. Currently, the bar is run by a regular customer who helped the bartender and one of its loyal customers. Vanguard is often featured in jazz magazines, so customers come from far away just to see it.

▲ Bean toast and coffee (750 yen)

At Vanguard, you can enjoy anko toast, honey cheese toast, jam toast, and more. The portion is for two slices of bread, but you can also change it to one slice if you prefer less. Anko toast has a nice balance of the slight saltiness of margarine and the sweetness of the anko. The coffee is carefully brewed one cup at a time using a siphon, while the master keeps track of the time with an hourglass, so you can enjoy a mellow, aromatic, and delicious coffee. It goes without saying that you can enjoy your coffee while listening to jazz at the counter and watching the coffee being brewed using a siphon.

▲Grilled curry (500 yen)

They serve curry for lunch on weekdays, but on Saturdays they also serve baked curry. An egg is hidden under the melted cheese, and the mild spiciness of the curry is complemented by the egg and cheese, making for a mellow and delicious baked curry. It's also great to eat it hot while blowing on it. This baked curry is also very popular.
Apparently many of the regular customers are former classmates, and one of them said, "When I come here, I see some familiar faces and it makes me feel at ease." The bar is open on Fridays, and once a month they hold live amateur jazz performances.
If you visit this local coffee shop, which is loved by locals and has been protected by many people, you will enjoy the comfortable atmosphere of this shop, which is steeped in many years of history, along with the jazz music playing, and you will have an exquisite breakfast.

For those who want to relax with a Japanese set meal

Soba teahouse Kuubei

Soba Chaya Kuubei is a soba noodle restaurant located in Godatara, the city. The bright and clean interior is eye-catching with its high ceilings and thick beams from an old house. And the music playing is... jazz. On the walls are photos of Kesennuma landscapes taken by a photographer living in Tokyo. As a gallery, it provides a place to showcase hobbies such as photography, painting, and patchwork. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, members of a photography club in the city would rotate their photographs on display. We wait for our food to arrive while looking at the exhibits.

▲ Pork miso soup breakfast with lots of ingredients (from 750 yen)

At Soba Chaya Kuubei, you can enjoy a hearty pork soup breakfast. Doesn't pork soup make you feel warm and happy? And as the name suggests, it's full of ingredients! It's a classic breakfast set with salad, rolled egg, and grilled salmon. I don't usually make these kinds of breakfast sets at home when I'm busy, but I think it's actually the breakfast I most crave on a daily basis. It's good for my body, and it gives me a sense of satisfaction that I've had a proper breakfast... (laughs) It's probably the most soothing breakfast I can have.

▲Tempura soba (1,100 yen)

For lunch, they have rice dishes such as soba, udon, pork bowl, Chinese rice bowl, and grated yam rice set. The Tenzaru Soba is not only flavorful and smooth thin noodles, but also deliciously fried tempura! It comes with a separate tempura sauce, so the soba sauce doesn't get too greasy. I'd like to try some rice dishes next time.
Kuubei is located along a prefectural road, so it's easy to get to. Recommended for those who feel a bit tired of eating seafood or who prefer a Japanese set meal for breakfast! When you enter through the noren curtain, the friendly owner will welcome you.
