Japanese-style inn Onabeya

Stay 2022/10/01

This 120-year-old inn is located in an inner bay area that is convenient for sightseeing and walking. It was severely damaged by the tsunami in the Great East Japan Earthquake, but was beautifully rebuilt and the building has been reborn.

The interior of the building, with its fragrant new tatami mats, is decorated with tanka poems by Kesennuma-born Japanese literature scholar and poet Naofumi Ochiai, and the magnificent antiques and furnishings placed throughout the building exude a long history and culture. The pond in the small garden is filled with colorful, beautiful Nishikigoi carp, which seem to help soothe the fatigue of everyday life.

The ceramics, which have been used since the Edo period, have been repaired by the owner with kintsugi (a repair technique in which cracks, chips, and other damaged parts are glued together with lacquer and decorated with gold and other metal powders), and are still treasured today. The hotel is dotted with antiques, beautiful things, and wonderful things that tickle the hearts of young girls, and the food is also highly acclaimed, so if you make a reservation in advance, you can enjoy a Japanese course meal even on a day trip.

In addition, the inn is also popular with fans who are on a pilgrimage to the anime "Wake Up, Girls!" (A story of seven girls who aim to become idols, set in Sendai) as it is a place associated with the characters. Please let us know when you make a reservation.

Please stay at the Onabeya Inn, a traditional Japanese inn with a long history where you can spend a thrilling time and enjoy your trip to Kesennuma to your heart's content.
