Kesennuma Oshima is gaining attention due to the completion of the Kesennuma Oshima Bridge and the decision to feature it as the setting for a morning drama series in 2021. It takes about 15 minutes by car from the center of Kesennuma to the Oshima Welcome Terminal and the tourist attraction Nodoka. If you take a drive to Oshima, which is surrounded by the sea, you will find places where you can experience the charm of this island rich in nature.
This time, we will introduce you to a cafe where you can enjoy the laid-back atmosphere that is unique to "Island Cafe"!

Enjoy a cream soda at a small coffee shop: "Utsuwa to Kissa nagame"

After crossing the Oshima Bridge and driving a short distance around the island, you will come across a small café renovated from a private home. This is Utsuwa to Kissa Nagame, which opened in September 2019. The interior of the shop, which also doubles as a rental gallery, is lined with furniture and antiques that the owner, who originally loved antiques and second-hand clothing, has gradually collected, creating a cozy atmosphere.
If you come here, you should definitely try the colorful melon and lemon cream soda. With a nostalgic and cute appearance that is reminiscent of a coffee shop, this is a drink that will excite you no matter how old you are.

There is also a food menu including spicy chicken curry and phat o' rice, as well as desserts such as creme brulee and carrot cake, so you can enjoy lunch or a cafe while leisurely browsing the exhibits in the rental gallery.

In addition to the tableware used in the cafe, the store also sells a selection of tableware, tableware, and miscellaneous goods from Japan and abroad, as well as original cream sodas and postcards with animal designs, which are recommended for purchasing as souvenirs to commemorate your visit.

Kitchen * Hana Fe HATOBA: Enjoy local cuisine and homemade sweets

Kitchen * Hana Fe HATOBA serves meals and cafe menus made with plenty of local ingredients. The restaurant has a quiet and calm atmosphere, with counter and table seating, allowing you to spend some time relaxing. The popular HATOBA set highlights seasonal Oshima ingredients, and sometimes includes chawanmushi with sea urchin in summer, matsutake mushroom in autumn, and abalone in winter. Rather than a pretentious menu, you can enjoy the natural bounty of Oshima as local cuisine that the locals eat.

The dishes and sweets made using Oshima's specialty camellia oil and blueberries are handmade by the owner, who "loves to eat and loves having others eat it."
During the interview, I ordered the "Japanese Set" of chilled zenzai and matcha, and the gentle sweetness of the zenzai made me smile. The matcha used is a Kyoto brand called "Nodoka," which has the same name as the cafe's cafe, "Nodoka."
You can enjoy the gentle taste of homemade food while gazing at the tranquil sea, and have a relaxing cafe time that will soothe both your body and mind.
