Outdoors in Kesennuma

Kesennuma
"Outdoor Play"This is it!

Located in the northern tip of Miyagi Prefecture, in the southeastern part of the Kitakami Mountains, it forms an excellent natural harbor that is calm all year round.
It is a town blessed with water and greenery, surrounded by the ria coastline and lush mountains such as Mt. Tokusenjo, where 50 azaleas bloom.

Compared to inland Miyagi Prefecture, it has a warm oceanic climate with an average annual temperature of about 11°C. There are many sunny days throughout the year, making it a comfortable climate to live in.
Cool breezes blow in the summer, especially along the coast, and although snow falls in the winter, it rarely accumulates to a high level.
This means that you can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including marine activities and camping, all year round.

At the same time, you can enjoy starry skies, azaleas and other plants, summer beaches, and early winter morning fog storms that arise from the sea surface.
There is a wealth of content that allows you to experience the charm of nature in every season.

Marine Activities

MarineActivity

Kesennuma has three swimming beaches, each with its own unique characteristics. One has an internationally certified "Blue Flag" beach, and another has classic waves that are loved by surfers. You can enjoy beach sports in each environment. The swimming season is in the summer, but you can enjoy the sea all year round through marine activities and sports.

  • SUP

SUP allows you to fully enjoy nature while riding on a board and strolling on the clear water. You can enjoy the natural beauty created by the cityscape and terrain from the sea's perspective. Try paddling yourself and feel the beauty of the water's surface and the sea breeze.

  • Surfing

Kesennuma is dotted with surfing points thanks to its complex, indented coastline. The biggest attraction is that you can enjoy the different wave qualities of both beach breaks with sandy seabeds and reef breaks with rocky seabeds.

  • Sea bathing

There are three swimming beaches in Kesennuma city. They have been selected as one of the "100 Best Swimming Beaches" by the Ministry of the Environment, and every year many visitors stay overnight nearby or go on day trips to enjoy the beaches. Find the beach that's perfect for you, such as Otani Beach Beach near the Otani Beach Roadside Station, Odanohama Beach on Oshima in Kesennuma, or Koizumi Beach Beach, where you can enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets!

  • Kesennuma/Karakuwa Olle

Kesennuma and Karakuwa Town are a peninsula surrounded by the beautiful scenery that is unique to the ria coast. This is an area where you can experience the scenic beauty that has been designated as part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park. The Olle course is a course where you can enjoy the local culture as you walk around the beautiful coastline of looming cliffs and rippling shorelines, the unspoiled scenery of rural mountains, and villages where you can feel the lives of the people of Karakuwa.

  • Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail

The Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail stretches 1000 kilometers from Aomori Prefecture to Fukushima Prefecture. The recommended course within the city is the 7-km ria coast trail course between Ogama and Misaki in Karakuwa Town. Located at the northeastern end of the city, you can get some exercise while enjoying the natural scenery of Karakuwa, known as a ria coast, and the plants that change their appearance with the seasons.

The fantastic seasonal scenery created by meteorological phenomena and the scenery where azalea flowers cover the entire mountain
This is a spectacular spot in Kesennuma that will make you want to take photos.

  • Kameyama (stargazing too)

It is a 235m high mountain located on the north side of Oshima. From the observation deck at the summit, you can see a panoramic view of Kesennuma city, Iwaizaki area, and the ria coastline, and on a clear day you can even see Mt. Kinka. At night, you can see the night view of Kesennuma city, fishing lights, and a starry sky.

  • "Mt. Tokusenjo" in spring

Mount Tokusenjo, renowned as Japan's best place to see azaleas, is a mountain with an altitude of 711m. The wild mountain azaleas and Renge azaleas grow over an area of 50ha (about 10 Tokyo Domes), and there are said to be as many as 50 of them. They reach full bloom from mid- to late May, painting the entire mountain red and orange, making Mount Tokusenjo one of Japan's most famous flower spots.

  • "Kesennuma Ki-Arashi" in winter

Kiarashi, a seasonal feature of early winter, is a steam mist that occurs due to the extreme temperature difference between the sea and land. Kesennuma Port is the only place where you can take a photo of a Kiarashi rising from the sea together with a large, impressive fishing boat. If you take a photo in backlight with the morning sun rising from the sea in front of you, you can capture the divine golden Kiarashi through the viewfinder.
