Touring Kesennuma with an oyster fisherman: The blessings of the sea and mountains where oysters grow
The Sanriku Coast is known as one of the three largest fishing grounds in the world. Kesennuma, located in the center of the coast, is a place where you can not only taste the bounty of the sea, but also experience it.
Kesennuma Bay has long been known as a natural harbor, and Oshima Seto, with its particularly gentle waves and suitable for aquaculture, is where oyster and scallop farming is actively carried out.
Why not go and meet the fishermen who painstakingly run aquaculture businesses in the sea area known as "Oshima Seto" between the Karakuwa Peninsula and Oshima?
Board a fishing boat and learn directly from local fishermen how oysters are cultivated. Feel the sea breeze, listen to the stories of people who live by the sea, and experience firsthand the wisdom of coexisting with nature.
As the boat sails through the bay, flocks of seagulls and black-tailed gulls gather. Feed them by hand and they'll skillfully flap their wings to catch the food! It's a popular photo opportunity that can be enjoyed by adults and children alike.
After the experience, there are also plans to enjoy oysters at an oyster shack or a local oyster restaurant.
This will be a valuable opportunity to experience life alongside the sea and create unforgettable memories.
