The model for the movie "Sparrow's Door Lock"! Information about Otani Beach Roadside Station

Recommended 2022/11/17

The film "Sparrow's Door Lock" was released for a whopping 2022 days from November 11, 11 to May 2023, 5, and set numerous records. The story even featured our city's "Otani Kaigan Roadside Station" as a model!
Our staff heard the information and rushed over to the theater, so we'll report right away!

There were scenes in the film depicting earthquakes, emergency earthquake alerts, and warning sounds, which made me a little nervous while watching, but the connections between people and the development of the story made it a really interesting film!
If you are thinking about visiting the model locations that appeared in the film, be sure to check out this article.

Synopsis

The story begins in a quiet port town in Kyushu. On her way to school, 17-year-old girl Suzume Iwato, who lives with her aunt, passes by a handsome young man with long hair named Sota Munakata.

Doors that bring disaster are opening one after another all over the country. The story follows the protagonist as he travels with Kusata, a "locker" who locks those doors.

The movie started, and while I was watching, thinking, "They made him appear even for a moment! I'm so happy! What scene is it?", the story quickly drew to an end.
Roadside Station Otani Kaigan was used as a model for a rest stop where the main characters take shelter from the rain during their journey around the country! It may be an important scene at the end of the story!

From here on, I will introduce the places and things that served as models for the film, without revealing the story itself, so that both those who have already seen the film and those who are about to watch it can enjoy it!

①Otani Coast Roadside Station Parking Lot

The photos were taken during a rainy and dimly lit period, similar to the scene in the movie.
The actual parking lot is called "Omoiyari Parking Lot."
This could be a key location where something happens towards the end of the story!

②Inside the facility, in the hallway in front of the tourist information center

I was amazed at how detailed the placement of the chairs was. The crane game shown in this scene is actually located at the entrance to the facility.

3) Cafeteria for meal scenes

▲ Cafeteria Umicoco

▲Counter seats

The Kesennuma staff must have seen the menu depicted in the meal scene as "Seafood Ramen"! By the way, the "funori" and "wakame" used in this ramen are from Kesennuma, and it is apparently the most popular menu item at the restaurant.
In the novel version, this seafood ramen is not referred to as such, but as "Fisherman's Whimsical Set Meal (Grilled Fish)."

Seafood Ramen ¥1,300 (tax included)

It's a great touch to make the movie version and the novel version different...! (impressed)
And the soft serve ice cream you casually enjoy after a meal is surely this "rich vanilla soft serve." It has a lot of milk fat, making it very rich and delicious, and perfect for a short break.

④The bread that Suzume was eating in the car

▲ Kesennuma Bakery's "Cream Sandwich" ¥180 (tax included)

This was also impressive, so I'd like to introduce it to you!
After we left the roadside station, the bread Suzume was eating in the car must have been Kesennuma's ``cream sandwich''!
This bread is popular as Kesennuma's soul food, and it is sold here at Otani Kaigan Roadside Station in a limited edition package with a "Shark Peanuts design"!

What did you think?
The facilities, food, and other elements are depicted in great detail, and the staff who watched the film on the big screen in the theater were impressed by the efforts of the production team, and were thrilled that Kesennuma was chosen as one of the models.
Whether you've seen the movie or are just about to watch it, be sure to come to Otani Kaigan Roadside Station to look for the places and foods that inspired the film!
