Shinmeizaki / Ukimido Hall and Ebisu Statue

Sightseeing 2022/05/01

Shinmeizaki is a viewing spot overlooking Kesennuma Bay and its inner bay. It is also known as the "Hundred Trees Garden" due to the diverse vegetation, including the northernmost Mokugenji (a city-designated natural monument) that grows there. In addition to Isuzu Shrine and Ikari Shrine, which is dedicated to Ikari Shinbei, a pioneer of local seaweed farming, there is also a monument commemorating the 100 Views of Japan, inscribed with a poem by local poet Kumagai Takeo, and a stone monument bearing a haiku by Matsuo Basho.

From the red promenade built over the sea, you can see the scenery of Kesennuma's inner bay, lined with anchored fishing boats.
Ukimido Hall is also lit up at night, making it a great place to take a stroll both day and night.

This spot also houses the "Third Ebisu Statue," which was rebuilt to coincide with the promenade. This statue is a rare standing Ebisu statue in Japan, with the second statue fishing for a sea bream and the third for a bonito. This auspicious Ebisu statue, which is said to bring good luck and is the symbol of Kesennuma Bay, is definitely worth a visit!

▲The nighttime illumination can be enjoyed from sunset until 10pm!
