Due to the reopening of the Karakuwa Peninsula Visitor Center, the Tsunami Experience Center has been closed.

Previous Karakuwa Peninsula Visitor Center

The Karakuwa Peninsula Visitor Center, opened by Miyagi Prefecture in 1984, has been a popular facility introducing the nature, lifestyles, and culture of the Karakuwa Peninsula. However, due to the aging of the facility, it was closed from July 2022 and subsequently underwent renovation work before reopening on April 7, 2024.
The spacious, open-plan space includes a rest area, where visitors can enjoy the view of greenery from newly installed large windows and a pellet stove, creating a relaxing and soothing space for those who come to enjoy the outdoors. In the exhibition space, the charms of the Karakuwa area are introduced through videos and other media.

Misaki campsite

This is a prefectural campsite located in Misaki, a scenic spot at the tip of the Karakuwa Peninsula in Kesennuma City. Because it is prefecturally run, it is very reasonably priced at 1 yen per adult per night (see below for details). This quiet campsite is located in a pine forest, and with the beautiful starry sky at night and the opportunity to spend some quiet time here, it is also known as the "holy land of solo camping." During the day, we recommend strolling along the coastal promenade. At the nearby Misaki Tourist Port, you can also fish and play on the rocks, so families can enjoy nature together.

Parking Information

Cars cannot be brought into the campsite. Please park in the Karakuwa Peninsula Visitor Center parking lot.

Hiking/trekking

There are two trekking courses within the Karakuwa Peninsula that hikers and trekkers can enjoy.

①Miyagi Olle Kesennuma-Karakuwa Course

Miyagi Olle was developed as a sister trail to the trekking trail "Olle," which originated on Jeju Island, Korea. "Olle" is originally a Korean word from Jeju that means "a narrow alleyway leading from the street to a house," and as the name suggests, in addition to the usual trekking through nature, the trail also includes private gardens and alleyways on its courses.
The Miyagi Olle Kesennuma-Karakuwa Course has been designed to allow you to fully enjoy the characteristics of this Olle, and is packed with the charms of the Olle, giving you a glimpse of the Karakuwa Rias coastline and the lives of the people who live there.
Why not enjoy the climate of Karakuwa at your own pace, touring the beautiful coastline with its looming cliffs and rippling shorelines, the pristine scenery of the countryside, and the fields and villages where you can get a feel for the lives of the Karakuwa people?

②Michinoku Sea Breeze Trail

A long trail that stretches for about 1,000 km from Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture to Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture. The best part is discovering the charm of the land by walking on foot, experiencing the magnificent coastal nature and the warmth of the local people. You can feel the dynamic ocean scenery, and there are many attractions such as the unique scenery of the ria coast and the bountiful fishing grounds that are one of the three largest in the world.

Sauna

There's even a sauna on the Karakuwa Peninsula!
"Karakuwa Goten Tsunakan" Sauna of the bay Tsunakan Sauna

You can also enjoy Finnish-style sauna facilities in Kesennuma, where you place sauna stones on a wood stove and enjoy steam (loyly).
The guesthouse "Karakuwa Goten Tsunakan" has two saunas, one is a mobile "Sauna Toaster" and the other is the newly completed "Tsunakan Sauna" in the summer of 2.

The sauna room at Tsunakan Sauna is on the second floor, and you can see Tuna Bay from the window. The ocean view changes with the seasons and time of day, so you'll never get bored no matter how long you look at it.
